DeKalb County (43,273), Auburn (13,506)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Greek Revival masonry courthouse was built in 1914.  The structure is located at 7th<\/sup> Street between Main and Cedar streets.  Indiana State Highway 8 is 7th<\/sup> Street.  The courthouse architects are Marshall S. and Guy A. Mahurin.  The grounds feature veteran memorials and a canon.  There were 1843 and 1864 courthouses also in Auburn, the only county seat.  The county was organized on February 7, 1835 from Native American Territory as the 71st<\/sup> county.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero Baron de Kalb.  The county seat is named for Auburn, England.  <\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeKalb County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, Two Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve DeKalb County (judicial.) <\/a>The county is in the northeast part of the state on the border with Ohio.  Fort Wayne is immediately south and Toledo, Ohio is northeast of the county.  The county center is 4.4 miles Northeast of Auburn nearer Waterloo.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Steuben County and Ohio and Allen, Noble and La Grange counties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 363 square miles.  It is 68 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 36 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 119.2 persons per square mile making it 31 out of 92 in the state.  <\/a>DeKalb County has 61.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 69 goes north to south through the county from Steuben County to Allen County.  United States Highway 6 crosses east to west from Ohio to Noble County.  United States Highway 27 is joined with Interstate Highway 69 from Steuben to Allen counties.  The county is a rectangle.  Auburn is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Auburn is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 31.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced DEKAL.  This county is in the Auburn Micropolitan Statistical Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
