Oscoda County (8,225), Mio* (1,690)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old wood Classical Revival courthouse was constructed in 1888.  It was replaced by this Modern wood facility on Morenci at 10th<\/sup> streets.  Michigan State Highway 33 is Morenci Street in the town.  Sidock Group, Inc., designed the new columned 2020 courthouse.  The old courthouse was destroyed by fire in 2016.  An Annex was built as a school in 1920 and renovated in 1995 to support the courthouse.  The county was established on April 1, 1840 from parts of Mackinac County and Native American Territory as the 59th<\/sup> county.  The county name is Native American for \u201cpebbly prairie.\u201d  The county seat is named for the wife of one of the town founders.  Union Corners was the first county seat until 1882 when Mio became the seat.  <\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oscoda County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Three Circuit Court Judges and Two District Court Judges serve Oscoda, Alcona, Arenac, and Iosco counties and One Probate Court Judge and court clerk serve Oscoda County (judicial.) <\/a>The county is in the northeast part of the southern peninsula.  Lansing, Michigan is south of the county.  The county center is in Mio 3.1 miles North-Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Montmorency, Alpena, Alcona, Iosco, Ogemaw, Roscommon, Crawford, and Otsego counties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 572 square miles.  It is 70 out of 83 in the state.  It ranks 78 out of 83 in population in the state.  It has a density of 14.4 persons per square mile making it 69 out of 83 in the state.  <\/a>Oscoda County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The county is a square.  Mio is located slightly south of center in the county.  Mio is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 20.6% of the county population.  The county is pronounced OS-KOE-DA.  The county seat is pronounced MEE-OE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
