The 1982 Modern courthouse replaced a brick blockhouse style facility constructed in 1916 which now houses the county administration.  It is on Water Street at Buckeye Avenue.  Dolven, Larson, and Daniels provided the masonry courthouse designs.   There was an earlier 1863 courthouse in Genoa.  The county was formed on November 25, 1861 as one of the original counties (3rd<\/sup> county.)  It is named for American statesman Stephen A. Douglas.  Minden is named for Minden, Germany.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Douglas County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Two District Court Judges and Two Justice Court Judges serve Douglas County <\/a>(judicial.)  Douglas County is on the western border with California.  Reno, Nevada is north and Las Vegas, Nevada is southeast of the county.  The county center is 7.2 miles East-Southeast of Minden nearer Gardnerville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Carson City and Lyon County and California. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the city is 710 square miles.  It is 15 out of 17 in the state.  It ranks 7 out of 17 in population in the state.  It has a density of 69.7 persons per square mile making it 4 out of 17 in the state.  <\/a>Douglas County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  United States Highway 50 travels north to west in the county from Carson City to California.  United States Highway 395 passes north to south from Carson City to California.  The county is shaped like a triangle with the east side eaten away.  Minden is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Gardnerville Ranchos is near the border with California south of Minden.  Minden is the county seat and Gardnerville Ranchos is the largest populated area.  Minden is 7.0% of the county population while Gardnerville Ranchos is 22.9% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced MIN-DEN.  The largest city is pronounced GARD-NER-VIL RAN-CHOES.  This county is in the Gardnerville Ranchos Micropolitan Statistical Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
