The Neo-Classical masonry building was built in 1916 as a school and remodeled in 1979 to become the courthouse.  It sits Nevada State Highway 305.  Interstate Highway 80 is two blocks to the northeast of the courthouse.  Frederic J. DeLongchamps is the building architect.  The courthouse has columns.  The former Austin courthouse dates from 1872.  Jacobsville (1861), Austin (1863), and Battle Mountain (1979) have all served as the county seat.  Lander County was established on January 1, 1862 as the 9th<\/sup> county.  The county is named for local engineer Frederick W. Lander.  Battle Mountain is named for the local hill.  <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lander County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  One District Court Judge serves Lander, Mineral, and Pershing counties and Two Justice Court Judges serve Lander County <\/a>(judicial.)  Lander County is in central Nevada.  The geographical center of Nevada is 26 miles southeast of Austin in the county.  Reno, Nevada is west and Las Vegas, Nevada is south of the county.  The county center is 51.8 miles South of Battle Mountain.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Elko, Eureka, Nye, Churchill, Pershing, and Humboldt counties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the city is 5798 square miles.  It is 9 out of 17 in the state.  It ranks 12 out of 17 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.0 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 17 in the state.  <\/a>Lander County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since are no incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 90 crosses the county east to west from Eureka County to Humboldt County.  United States Highway 50 travels east to west from Eureka County, east, to Churchill County, west.  A fat letter J best describes the county\u2019s shape.  Battle Mountain is in the northern quarter of the county near the northwest border.  Battle Mountain is the county seat and the largest populated areas.  It is 64.6% of the county population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
