Hudson County (724,857), Jersey City (292,754)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1910 masonry building replaced an 1845 version.  The courthouse is on Newark Avenue at Baldwin Avenue.  New Jersey State Highway 139 is two blocks northeast.  Hugh Roberts is the designer of the Beaux Arts and Classical Revival courthouse.  The building was restored in 1985.  An Administration 1957 building augments the courthouse.  The county was created on January 1, 1840 from Bergen and Essex counties as the 18th<\/sup> county.  The county is named for the Hudson River.  Jersey City, the only county seat, is named for the state.  Hudson County was the birthplace for 7 New Jersey Governors, Franklin Murphy, James F. Fielder, Clarence E. Case, Edward I. Edwards, A. Harry Moore, John J. Farmer, Jr., and James E. McGreevey.  <\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hudson County government consists of an executive, a sheriff, an administrator and a clerk (executive).  It has 9 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-nine Superior Court Judges and a prosecutor serve Hudson County <\/a>(judicial.)  It is located in the northeast on the border with New York.  New York, New York is immediately east and Newark, New Jersey is immediately southwest of the county.  The county center is in Jersey City 2.3 miles Northeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Bergen County and New York and Union and Essex counties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 47 square miles.  It is 21 out of 21 in the state.  It ranks 4 out of 21 in population in the state.  It has a density of 15422.5 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 21 in the state.  <\/a>Hudson County has 88.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 78 originates in the county and heads southwest into Essex County.  Interstate Highway 95 travels northeast to southwest from Bergen County to Essex County.  United States Highways 1\/9 parallel Interstate Highway 95 from Bergen to Essex counties.  The county resembles a ship sailing southwest.  Jersey City is located in the South quarter of the county.  Jersey City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 40.4% of the county population.  This county is in the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island Metropolitan Statistical Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
