Tioga County (41,046), Wellsboro (3,470)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stone Greek Revival courthouse was built in 1835 and remodeled in 1931.  The courthouse is on Main Street at Central Avenue.  Main Street is Pennsylvania State Highway 660.  Lester, Merrit & Davis provided the building designs.  Veteran memorials are across the street.  An Annex was built in 1974.  Tioga County was created on March 26, 1804 from Lycoming County as the 42nd<\/sup> county with Wellsboro as the only county seat.  The county is named for the Tioga River which is Native American for \u201cat the forks.\u201d  The county seat is named for settler Mary Wells.  Tioga County is the birthplace of 1 Pennsylvania governor, William A. Stone.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tioga County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an attorney, a coroner, and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  One Common Pleas Court Judges and Three Magistrate Court Judges serve Tioga County <\/a>(judicial.)  The county is on the northern border with New York.  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is south and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is southeast of the county.  The county center is 1.8 miles Northeast of Wellsboro.  The county is surrounded clockwise by New York and Bradford, Lycoming, and Potter counties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 1137 square miles.  It is 4 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 51 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 36.1 persons per square mile making it 62 out of 67 in the state.  <\/a>Tioga County has 32.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 6 crosses the county from east to west from Bradford County to Potter County.  United States Highway 15 enters from the north, New York, and exits to the south, Lycoming County.  The county is an overall rectangle with the southeast corner eaten away.  Wellsboro is south and west of center in the county.  Wellsboro is the county seat and the largest city.  Wellsboro is 8.5% of the county population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
