The Modern red brick facility was constructed in 1998.  The building is on Hicks Street at Main Street.  Main Street is United States Highway 58 Business.  Browne, Eichman, Dalgliesh, Gilpin and Paxton are the architects.  The courthouse features columns and a tower.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There were 1746 and 1854 courthouses before.  Cochran (1721), Freeman (1746), and Lawrenceville (1781) have all served as the county seat.  The county was created on January 1, 1720 from Prince George County as the 22nd<\/sup> county.  It is named for the Duchy of Brunswick-Lunenburg, Germany.  It is the same source name as for Lunenburg County.  Lawrenceville is named for Captain James Lawrence.  Brunswick County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Albertis S. Harrison, Jr.  <\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brunswick County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer, and a revenue commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges and Five District Court Judges serve Brunswick, Greensville, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex counties and Emporia and Hopewell cities, Forty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Brunswick, Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex counties and Colonial Heights, Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg cities, and a court clerk serves Brunswick County (judicial.)  The county is on the southern border with North Carolina.  Richmond, Virginia is north and Virginia Beach, Virginia is northeast of the county.  The county center is in Lawrenceville .2 miles Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Dinwiddie and Greensville counties and North Carolina and Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, and Nottoway counties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 566 square miles.  It is 13 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 93 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 28.0 persons per square mile making it 123 out of 133 in the state.  <\/a>Brunswick County has 9.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 85 crosses through the county from northeast to southwest from Dinwiddie County to Mecklenburg County.  United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 85 from Dinwiddie to Mecklenburg counties.  United States Highway 58 goes east to west from Greensville County to Mecklenburg County.  The county resembles a fat comma.  Lawrenceville is located near the center of the county.  Lawrenceville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 6.4% of the county population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
