The Poquoson City courts shares the 1997 facility with York County.  It is located on Ballard and Church Street in Yorktown.  United States Highway 17 is one block to the west of the location.  HLM Design and Caro, Monroe & Lang combined on the Modern Colonial Revival red brick courthouse.  City Hall has the City Council is a light tan brick building.  It is located off of Virginia State Highway 171.  Poquoson City was established on January 1, 1975 from York County as the 133rd<\/sup> and final county\/county equivalent.  The city name is Native American for \u201cgreat marsh.\u201d  <\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poquoson City government consists of a Mayor, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer, and a revenue commissioner (executive).  It has 6 Council Members (legislative.)  Four Circuit Court Judges and Six District Court Judges serve Poquoson City and Charles City, Gloucester, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, and York counties and Williamsburg City, Sixty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Poquoson City and Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York counties and Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Williamsburg cities, and a court clerk serves Poquoson City (judicial.)  The city is in the southeast part of the state.  Virginia Beach, Virginia is southeast and Richmond, Virginia is west of the city.  The city center is in Poquoson 1.1 miles Northwest of downtown.  The city is surrounded clockwise by Gloucester and Northampton counties, and the City of Hampton, and York County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 16 square miles.  It is 110 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 106 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 778.4 persons per square mile making it 41 out of 133 in the state.  <\/a>Poquoson has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the city.  The city is shaped like an arch.  The city is pronounced PO-KWO-SON.  This city is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
