The year of construction and the architect for the red brick facility are unknown.  It is sited on Beverly Street between Central Avenue and Lewis Avenue.  United States Highway 250 passes one block to the east of the site.  The city was formed on July 10, 1902 from Augusta County as the 109th<\/sup> county equivalent.  The city is named for Rebecca Staunton, wife of Governor William Gooch.  She is also the namesake for the county seat of Augusta County.  <\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staunton City government consists of a Mayor, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer, and a revenue commissioner (executive).  It has 6 Council Members (legislative.)  Three Circuit Court Judges and Eight District Court Judges serve Staunton City and Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Botetourt, Craig, Highland, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Lexington, and Waynesboro cities, Fifty-nine Magistrate Court Judges serve Staunton City and Alleghany, Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Craig, Franklin, Henry, Highland, Nelson, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and Rockbridge counties and Buena Vista, Covington, Danville, Lexington, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Roanoke, Salem, and Waynesboro cities, and a court clerk serves Staunton City (judicial.) The city is in western Virginia.  Roanoke, Virginia is southwest and Richmond, Virginia is southeast of the city.  The city center is in Staunton 1.1 miles Northeast of downtown.  The city is completely surrounded by Augusta County. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the city is 20 square miles.  It is 108 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 68 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1287.7 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 133 in the state.  <\/a>Staunton has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated city limits.  United States Highway 11 travels northeast to southwest through the city in from and out to Augusta County.  United States Highway 250 goes southeast to northwest in and out of Augusta County.  Woodrow Wilson, the 27th<\/sup> President, was born in this city.  The county resembles a dog head facing northeast.  The city is pronounced STAN-TON.  This city is in the Staunton-Waynesboro Micropolitan Statistical Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
