Florence County (4,555), Florence* (592)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tan brick Romanesque Revival courthouse was built in 1889.  The facility is located on Lake Avenue at Cyclops Street.  United States Highway 2 passes one block north of the location.  James E. Clancy provided the designs.  The red roof stands out in the community.  The building was enlarged in 1994.  Florence County was founded on January 1, 1882 from parts of Marinette and Oconto counties as the 64th<\/sup> county with Florence as the only county seat.  The county and its county seat are named for settler Florence Terry Hulst.  <\/a><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florence County government consists of a Manager, a sheriff, a clerk, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 12 Supervisors (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge serves Florence and Forest counties and a district attorney and a court clerk serve Florence County (judicial.)  The county is on the northeast border with Michigan.  Green Bay, Wisconsin is southeast and Madison, Wisconsin is southwest of the county.  The county looks like a fat sled.  The City of Florence is located near the northern border of the county.  Long Lake is on the western border of the county.  Florence is the county seat and the largest populated area.  Florence is 13.0% of the county population.  The county center is 15.7 miles Southwest of Florence nearer Fern.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Michigan and Marinette and Forest counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 488.2 square miles.  It is 58 out of 72 in the state.  It ranks 71 out of 72 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9.0 persons per square mile making it 71 out of 72 in the state.  <\/a>Florence County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  United States Highways 2\/141 cross the county from east, Michigan, back to the north, Michigan.    This county is in the Iron Mountain Micropolitan Statistical Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
