San Joaquin County (779,227), Stockton (320,810)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Modern style building appearance is the description of the 1961 courthouse.  Stockton was home for the 1890 courthouse also, as Stockton has been the only county seat.  Mayo, Johnson, DeWolf, Clawsley, and Whipple were the courthouse designers.  A new courthouse was under construction in 2016.  An Administrative Center was added in 2009.  Following California statehood San Joaquin County was created on February 18, 1850 as an original county.  It is the 14th<\/sup> county.  The county was named for the San Joaquin River.  The courthouse is located on East Weber Avenue between Hunter and San Joaquin streets.  California State Highway 4 is three blocks south of the site.  Stockton was named for Commodore Robert F. Stockton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Joaquin County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Thirty Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve San Joaquin County (judicial.)  <\/a>The county is located in the north central part of the state.  Its northern border is the Mokelumne River, its northwestern border is the San Joaquin River, and its southeastern border is the Stanislaus River.  Sacramento, California is in the county to the north and San Francisco, California is west.  The county center is in Stockton 1.3 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Sacramento, Amador, Calaveras, Stanislaus, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties.  The county is shaped like a plow with wavy borders formed by the rivers.  Stockton is near to the center in the county.  Stockton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 41.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SAN WA-KEEN.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The area of the county is 1399 square miles.  It is 34 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 14 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 557.0 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 58 in the state.  <\/a>San Joaquin County has 79.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 5 crosses north to south, Sacramento County to Stanislaus County.  This county is in the Stockton Metropolitan Statistical Area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
