The Neo-Classical Revival county courthouse of Jenkins County was built in 1910 of light red/tan brick.  It is located on a square at Winthrope, Daniel, College, and Harvey streets.  Georgia State Highway 17 is Winthrope Street.  L. F. Goodrich is the building architect.  It features a tower with a working clock, Lady Justice on top, and a porch.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county was founded on August 17, 1905 from parts of Bulloch, Burke, Emanuel, and Screven counties as the 138th county.  Millen has been the only county seat.  Governor Charles Jones Jenkins provided the inspiration for the county’s name.  Millen is named for railroad officer McPherson B. Millen.  Jenkins County was the birthplace of 2 Georgia Governors, Melvin E. Thompson and J. Nathan Deal.  The county center is 4.4 miles Southwest of Millen nearer Emmalane. 

Jenkins County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 4 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-one Superior Court Judges serve Jenkins, Appling, Bacon, Brantley, Bryan, Bulloch, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, Coffee, Effingham, Evans, Glynn, Jeff Davis, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, Screven, Tattnall, Ware, and Wayne counties and a State Judge and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Jenkins County (judicial.) The county is located in eastern Georgia.  The Ogeechee River flows through the middle of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Burke, Screven, Bulloch, and Emanuel counties. 

The area of the county is 350 square miles.  It is 76 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 136 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 24.8 persons per square mile making it 134 out of 159 in the state.  Jenkins County has 34.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 25 crosses the county north to south from Burke County to Bulloch County.  The county is shaped like a marshmallow.  Millen is located slightly north of center in the county.  Millen is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city.  It is 34.2% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced MIL-EN.
