The stone capitol was originally completed in 1917 using the designs of George B. Post. It is located on Main Street at Pinckney Street. Interstate State Highway 94 is 4 miles northeast of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Beaux Arts style. The Supreme Court is in the East Wing of the Capitol in Charleston and there are Court of Appeals districts in Milwaukee, Wausau, Waukesha, and Madison. The state was officially created as the 30th state on May 29, 1848 from Native American lands and the Wisconsin Territory. Madison has been the capital since 1838 with Belmont as the capital before. The state is named for the river originally was Native American for “it lies red,” but later changed by the French to Ouisconsin. Madison is named for President James Madison. Milwaukee is named for the Native American word meaning “good.” Timms Hill in Price County is the highest point and the lowest point is Lake Michigan.
Wisconsin government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Attorney General, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. There are 33 Senators and 99 Assembly Representatives in the Legislature. Seven Supreme Court Justices and Sixteen Court of Appeals Justices serve Wisconsin in the Judicial Divisions. Wisconsin is located in the north central part of the United States. The geographic center is in Wood County 9 miles east southeast of Marshfield. The state is surrounded clockwise by Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.
The area is 65496 square miles. It is 23rd largest state in the country. It is the 20th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 90.0 persons per square mile making it 26th in the country. Its major rivers are the Mississippi, the Menominee, the Fox, the Milwaukee, the Rock, the Wisconsin, the Chippewa, and the Saint Croix. Madison is located in the south central part of the state. Milwaukee is located in the southeastern part of the state on Lake Michigan.
