The granite capitol was originally completed in 1901 using the designs of James Riely Gordon. It was enlarged in 1918 and 1938. It is located on Washington Street at 18th Avenue. Interstate Highway 17 is 5 blocks to the west of the capitol. It is designed in Classical Revival. The major supporting structures are the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Division 1 Courthouse in Phoenix and the Court of Appeals Division 2 Courthouse in Tucson. The state was official created as the 48th state on February 14, 1912 from the Arizona Territory which came from the New Mexico Territory and Native American lands. The state’s name comes from a Spanish and Native American word meaning “small spring.” The name of Phoenix means “born from another civilization.” Phoenix has been the capital since 1889 with Prescott and Tucson serving as capital in the territorial days. Humphreys Peak in Coconino County is the highest point and the Colorado River at the Mexican border is the lowest point.
Arizona government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Education Superintendent, Mine Inspector, and Corporation Commissioner. There are 30 Senators and 60 Representatives in the Legislative. Seven Supreme Court Justices, Sixteen Court of Appeals Judges North and Six Court of Appeals Judges South serve Arizona in the Judicial. Arizona is located in southwestern United States. The geographic center is in Yavapai County 50 miles east-southeast of Prescott. The state is surrounded clockwise by Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Mexico, California and Nevada.
The area is 113990 square miles. It is 6th largest state in the country. It is the 14th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 62.8 persons per square mile making it 32nd in the country. Major rivers include the Colorado, the Gila, the Salt, and the Santa Cruz. Phoenix is located in the southern third of the state.
