The marble capitol was originally completed in 1917 using the designs of Tracy and Swartwout.  It is located on Capitol Avenue at Broadway Street.  United States Highway 50 is three blocks southwest of the capitol.  The Capitol is designed in Classical Revival style.  The major supporting structures are the Supreme Court building in Jefferson City and Court of Appeals buildings in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield.  The state was officially created as the 24th state on August 10, 1821 from Native American lands, Louisiana Purchase, and the Missouri Territory.  Saint Louis and Saint Charles have been the capitals until 1826 when Jefferson City assumed the role.  The state’s name comes from the river which is for the Native American tribe meaning “those who have dugout canoes.”  Jefferson City is named for President Thomas Jefferson.  Kansas City is named for the Kansas River which is named for the Native American tribe.  Taum Sauk Mountain in Iron County is the highest point and the lowest point is the Saint Francis River as it enters Arkansas.

Missouri government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor, and Treasurer.  There are 34 Senators and 163 Representatives in the Legislative.  Seven Supreme Court Justices and Thirty-two Court of Appeals Justices serve Missouri in the Judicial.  Missouri is located in the central part of the United States.  The geographic center is in Miller County 21 miles southwest of Jefferson City.  The state is surrounded clockwise by Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.

The area is 69707 square miles.  It is 21st largest state in the country.  It is the 19th most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 88.3 persons per square mile making it 28th in the country.  Its major rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Osage, the Saint Francis, the Grand, the Platte, and the Gasconade.  Jefferson City is located in the center of the state.  Kansas City is located in the northwest quarter of the state on the border with Kansas.
