The stone and concert Romanesque courthouse was erected in 1902.  It is located in a square at Main, Benton, Folger, and Washington streets.  United States Highway 65 Business passes on its east side as Main Street.  Robert G. Kirsch is the architect.  The structure features a working clock tower and Veterans Plaque.  There were 1834, 1843, 1867 courthouses all in Carrollton, the only county seat.  Carroll County was formed on January 2, 1833 from Native American Territory as the 35th county.  The county and county seat are named for the signer of the Declaration of Independence Charles Carroll. 

Carroll County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, an attorney, a collector, a coroner, an assessor and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  One Circuit Court Judge serves Carroll and Ray counties and One County Court Judge and a court clerk serve Carroll County (judicial.) The county is in north central Missouri.  Kansas City, Missouri is west and Saint Louis, Missouri is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.3 miles North of Carrollton nearer Bogard.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Livingston, Chariton, Saline, Lafayette, Ray, and Caldwell counties. 

The area of the county is 695 square miles.  It is 30 out of 115 in the state.  It ranks 94 out of 115 in population in the state.  It has a density of 12.2 persons per square mile making it 99 out of 115 in the state.  Carroll County has 60.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 24 enters the county from the east, Chariton County, and exits to the south, Lafayette County.  United States Highway 65 comes from Livingston County, north, and joins United States Highway 24 to go into Lafayette County, south.  The county looks like an arrow pointing northwest.  Carrollton is located in the southern quarter of the county near the Missouri River border.  Carrollton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 41.3% of the county population.
