The granite capitol was originally completed in 1899 using the designs of Thomas Fuller, Leopold Eidlitz, Henry Hobson Richardson, and Isaac G. Perry. It is located on Washington Avenue at State Street. Interstate Highway 287 is 4 blocks east of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Romanesque Revival and Neo-Renaissance style. The supporting buildings are the State Court of Appeals building in Albany and the Judicial Department Court of Appeals buildings in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Albany, and Rochester. The state was officially created as the 11th state on July 26, 1788 from Native American lands and the Province of New York. Albany has been the capital since 1797 when it assumed it from New York City. Kingston, Hurley, and Poughkeepsie were capitals before New York City. The state’s and New York City names come from the Duke of York. Albany is named for the Duke of Albany. Mount Marcy in Essex County is the highest point and the lowest point is sea level at the Atlantic Ocean.
New York government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and Treasurer. There are 63 Senators and 150 Assembly Members in the Legislature. Seven Court of Appeals Justices serve New York in the Judicial. New York is located in the northeast part of the United States on the border with Canada. The geographic center is in Madison County 12 miles south southeast of Oneida. The state is surrounded clockwise by Canada, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, the Atlantic Ocean, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The area is 54555 square miles. It is 27th largest state in the country. It is the 4th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 370.3 persons per square mile making it 7th in the country. Its major rivers are the Hudson, the East, the Mohawk, the Delaware, the Susquehanna, the St. Lawrence, and the Oswego. Albany is the east central fourth of the state. New York City is located in the southeast part of the state.
