The red brick Greek Revival facility was built in 1859. The courthouse in 1885 and a county building has been recently added. The structure is located on Pulteney and Morris streets. Interstate Highway 86 is two blocks south of the building. S. S. May and Brewster are the architects. There are augmenting courthouses in Corning and Hornell. Steuben County was founded on January 1, 1796 from Ontario County as the 23rd county. There have also been courthouses in Corning (1903) and Hornell (1907). The county is named for American Revolutionary War hero German General Baron von Steuben. The county seat is named for Bath, England.
Steuben County government consists of an executive, an administrator, a sheriff, a comptroller, an attorney, an assessor, and a clerk (executive). It has 17 Legislators (legislative.) One County Court Judge, One Family Court Judge, and One Surrogate Court Judge serve Steuben County (judicial.) The county is on the southern border with Pennsylvania. Buffalo, New York is northwest and Albany, New York is northeast of the county. The county center is 4.2 miles West-Southwest of Bath. The county is surrounded clockwise by Ontario, Yates, Schuyler, and Chemung counties and Pennsylvania and Allegany and Livingston counties.
The area of the county is 1404 square miles. It is 10 out of 62 in the state. It ranks 30 out of 62 in population in the state. It has a density of 66.7 persons per square mile making it 45 out of 62 in the state. Steuben County has 40.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 86 originates in the county and heads west into Allegany County. Interstate Highway 390 comes in from the north, Livingston County, and terminates. United States Highway 15 originates and goes south into Pennsylvania. Steuben County looks like a fat capital letter L. Bath is located near the center of the county. Corning is in the southeast corner of the county. Bath is the county seat and Corning is the largest city. Bath is 6.0% of the county population while Corning is 11.3% of the county population. This county is in the Corning Micropolitan Statistical Area.
