The red brick capitol was originally completed in 1933 using the designs of E. William Martin and Norman M. Isham.  It is located on the Green at State Street.  United States Highway 13 is 5 blocks to the east of the capitol.  It is designed in Colonial Revival style.  The major supporting structures are the Supreme Court Courthouse in Dover and two augmenting courthouses in Wilmington and Georgetown.  The state was officially created as the 1st state on December 7, 1787 coming from the Lower Counties of the Delaware and Native American lands.  The state’s name comes from the river which is named for the governor of Virginia, Thomas West, 3rd Baron of De La Warr.  The name of Dover comes from Dover, England.  Wilmington is named for the Earl of Wilmington by William Penn.  New Castle was the capital until 1777 when Dover took over.  Ebright Azimuth in New Castle County is the highest point and the Atlantic Ocean is the lowest point at sea level. 

Delaware government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Treasurer, Attorney General, Auditor, and Insurance Commissioner.  There are 21 Senators and 41 Representatives in the Legislative.  Five Supreme Court Justices serve Delaware in the Judicial.  Delaware is located in the east central United States.  The geographic center is in Kent County 11 miles south of Dover.  The state is surrounded clockwise by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the Atlantic Ocean, and Maryland. 

The area is 2489 square miles.  It is 49th largest state in the country.  It is the 45th most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 397.7 persons per square mile making it 6th in the country.  Its only major river is the Delaware.  Dover is located near the center of the state and Wilmington is on the northern border of the state.
