The limestone capitol was originally completed in 1861 using the designs of Henry Walter, Thomas Cole, William Russell West, and J. O. Sawyer.  It is located on High Street at State Street.  Interstate Highway 70 is 10 blocks south of the capitol.  The Capitol is designed in Greek Revival style.  Augmenting the capitol are the Supreme Court in Columbus and 12 district Court of Appeals courthouses, one each in Cincinnati, Dayton, Lima, Chillicothe, Canton, Toledo, Youngstown, Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Warren, and Middletown.  The state was officially created as the 17th state on March 1, 1803 from Native American lands and the Northwest Territory.  Chillicothe and Zanesville served as capital until 1816 when Columbus assumed the role.  The state is named for the river which is Native American for “good river.”  Columbus is named for explorer Christopher Columbus.  Campbell Hill in Logan County is the highest point and the lowest point is the Ohio River at the Indiana border. 

Ohio government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Auditor, and Treasurer.  There are 33 Senators and 99 Representatives in the Legislature.  Seven Supreme Court Justices and Twelve Court of Appeals Justices serve Ohio in the Judicial.  Ohio is located in the north eastern part of the United States on the border with Canada.  The geographic center is in Knox County 25 miles north northeast of Columbus.  The state is surrounded clockwise by Canada, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan. 

The area is 44826 square miles.  It is 34th largest state in the country.  It is the 7th most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 263.2 persons per square mile making it 10th in the country.  Its major rivers are the Ohio, the Scioto, the Maumee, the Auglaize, the Portage, the Sandusky, the Cuyahoga, the Black, the Great Miami, the Muskingum, and the Tuscarawas.  Columbus is located in the central part of the state.
