A brown stone facility is the 1870 courthouse for Logan County.  The building is located on Main, Columbus, Opera, and Court streets.  United States Highway 68 is two blocks east of the courthouse.  Alexander Koehler designed this Franco-Italian and Second Empire courthouse.  The building was restored in 2015.  It features a tower with Lady Justice.  Veteran memorials and a fountain are on the grounds.  The county was created on March 1, 1818 from Champaign County as the 53rd county with Bellefontaine as the only county seat.  Logan County is named for American Indian war hero Benjamin Logan.  The county seat is named for local springs. 

Logan County government consists of an auditor, a sheriff, an attorney, and a coroner (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Three Common Pleas Court Judges and a court clerk serve Logan County (judicial.)  Logan County is in the western part of the state.  Toledo, Ohio is north and Columbus, Ohio is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.7 miles West-Northwest of Bellefontaine.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Hardin, Union, Champaign, Shelby, and Auglaize counties. 

The area of the county is 458.4 square miles.  It is 39 out of 88 in the state.  It ranks 52 out of 88 in population in the state.  It has a density of 100.7 persons per square mile making it 54 out of 88 in the state.  Logan County has 50.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 33 enters the county from Auglaize County to Union County.  United States Highway 68 goes north to south from Hardin County to Champaign County.  The highest point in Ohio, Campbell Hill, is located in this county.  The county is a rectangle.  The county seat is located slightly south of center in the county.  Bellefontaine is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 30.6% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced BEL-FON-TIN.  This county is in the Bellefontaine Micropolitan Statistical Area.
