The marble and granite capitol was originally completed in 1912 using the designs of John E. Tourtellotte and Charles Hummel. It is located on Jefferson Street at Capitol Boulevard. Interstate Highway 184 is nine blocks southwest of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Classical style. The major supporting structure is the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Courthouse in Boise. The state was officially created as the 43rd state on July 3, 1890 from Native American lands and Idaho Territory. Lewiston was the capital until 1865 when Boise assumed the role. The state’s name comes from a Native American word meaning “the sun comes down the mountain.” The name of Boise comes from the French word meaning “the woods.” Borah Peak in Custer County is the highest point and the lowest point is in Nez Perce County where the Snake and Clearwater rivers combine.
Idaho government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, School Superintendent, and Attorney General. There are 35 Senators and 70 Representatives in the Legislative. Five Supreme Court Justices and Four Court of Appeals Justices serve Idaho in the Judicial. Idaho is located in the northwest part of the United States. The geographic center is in Custer County 21 miles west southwest of Challis. The state is surrounded clockwise by Canada, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.
The area is 83,569 square miles. It is 14th largest state in the country. It is the 38th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 22.0 persons per square mile making it 44th in the country. Its major rivers are the Snake, the Pend Oreille, the Clearwater, the Boise, the Salmon, and Coeur d’Alene. Boise is located in the southwest quarter of the state.
