The granite capitol was originally completed in 1889 using the designs of Willoughby J. Edbrooke and Franklin Pierce Burnham. They are both located at Washington, Mitchell, Capitol, and MLK streets. Interstate Highway 75 is one block southeast of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Renaissance, Classical Revival style. The major supporting structure is the Supreme Court Courthouse in Atlanta which also houses the Court of Appeals. Savannah, Augusta, Louisville and Milledgeville have also been the sites of previous capitals. Atlanta became the capital in 1868. The state was officially created as the 4th state on January 2, 1788 as an original state from Native American lands and the Provence of Georgia. The state’s name comes from King George II of England. The name of Atlanta comes a terminus of the Western and Atlantic railroad. Brasstown Bald in Towns and Union counties is the highest point and the Atlantic Ocean is the lowest point at sea level.
Georgia government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, School Superintendent, Insurance Commissioner, Agriculture Commissioner, Labor Commissioner, Attorney General, and Five Public Service Commissioners. There are 56 Senators and 180 Representatives in the Legislative. Nine Supreme Court Justices and Fifteen Court of Appeals Justices serve Georgia in the Judicial. Georgia is located in the southeastern United States. The geographic center is in Twiggs County 18 miles southeast of Macon. The state is surrounded clockwise by Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, the Atlantic Ocean, Florida, and Alabama.
The area is 59425 square miles. It is 24th largest state in the country. It is the 8th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 180.3 persons per square mile making it 16th in the country. Its major rivers are the Savannah, the Altamaha, the Suwannee, and the Chattahoochee. Atlanta is located in the northwest quarter of the state.
