A Modern style red and white brick Justice Center replaced the classic 1883 courthouse in 2004.  It is situated on Georgia Road near Hammond Drive.  United States Highway 78 is three blocks north of the site.  Carter Watkins Associates designed the building.  The old courthouse continues to house county administrative offices along with a small annex nearby.  This red brick courthouse is on Court and Broad Streets.  Georgia State Highway 11 is Broad Street.  It features a tower and porches on the first and second floors.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county center is in Monroe 1.8 miles South of the city center. 

Walton County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-four Superior Court Judges serve Walton, Banks, Barrow, Burke, Clarke, Columbia, Elbert, Franklin, Glascock, Hart, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, McDuffie, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Richmond, Taliaferro, Warren, and Wilkes counties and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Walton County (judicial.) Walton County is in northern Georgia to the southeast of Atlanta, Georgia and part of its metropolitan area.  Athens, Georgia lies northeast of the county.  The county is surrounded by Barrow, Oconee, Morgan, Newton, Rockdale, and Gwinnett counties.  The county was created on December 15, 1818 from Creek lands as the 46th county with Monroe as the only county seat.  George Walton is the county namesake as a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  Monroe is named for President James Monroe.  He also provided the inspiration for Monroe County.  Walton County was the birthplace of 3 Georgia Governors, Alfred H. Colquitt, Henry D. McDaniel, and Clifford M. Walker. 

The area of the county is 329 square miles.  It is 88 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 27 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 293.8 persons per square mile making it 27 out of 159 in the state.  Walton County has 34.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 78 crosses the county east to west from Oconee to Gwinnett counties.  The Apalachee River forms its eastern border.  The county is diamond shaped except for the wandering eastern border.  Monroe is slightly north of center in the county.  Monroe is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 15.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
