The granite and marble capitol was originally completed in 1878 using the designs of Richard M. Upjohn.  It is located at Capitol and Trinity streets.  Interstate Highway 84 is 1 block to the northwest of the capitol.  It is designed in Eastlake style.  The major supporting structures are the Supreme Court Courthouse and the Court of Appeals Courthouse.  The state was officially created as the 5th state on January 9, 1788 as an original state coming from the Connecticut Colony.  The state’s name comes from the river which was named for the Native American word for meaning “long tidal river.”  The name of Hartford comes from Hertford, England.  Bridgeport is a geographical name for its location as a port bridging the banks of the Pequonnock River.  Hartford has been the lone capital since 1875 with New Haven sharing that role from 1701.  Mount Frissell extends its southern slopes into Connecticut in Litchfield County to be the highest point and the Long Island Sound part of the Atlantic Ocean is the lowest point at sea level. 

Connecticut government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Attorney General, and Comptroller.  There are 36 Senators and 151 Representatives in the Legislative.  Seven Supreme Court Justices and Nine Court of Appeals Judges serve Connecticut in the Judicial.  Connecticut is located in New England states in the northeastern United States.  The geographic center is in Hartford County 1 mile east of East Berlin.  The state is surrounded clockwise by Massachusetts, Rhode Island, the Atlantic Ocean, and New York. 

The area is 5543 square miles.  It is 48th largest state in the country.  It is the 29th most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 650.5 persons per square mile making it 4th in the country.  Major rivers include the Connecticut, the Pawcatuck, and the Thames.  Hartford is located in the north center part of the state and Bridgeport is in the southwestern part of the state.
