The huge columns give the Roman look to the courthouse. It was built in 1914 to replace the 1871 structure and renovated in 2014. It is located on Elm Street at Temple Street. United States Highway 5 is three blocks east of the site. William Allen and Richard Williams are the building designers. There is also a District Courthouse in New Haven and auxiliary courthouses in Derby, Meriden, Milford, and two in Waterbury. The county was formed on May 10, 1666 and named for the city. The county is an original county and the 3rd county. The city was named for Haven, England. New Haven County was the birthplace of 10 Connecticut Governors, Henry W. Edwards, Samuel A. Foot, Roger S. Baldwin, Charles H. Pond, James E. English, Charles R. Ingersoll, Hobart B. Bigelow, Henry B. Harrison, Simeon E. Baldwin, and John G. Rowland.

The county is located in south central Connecticut on the Long Island Sound. The center of the county is 6.5 miles North-Northeast of New Haven in North Haven. The county is surrounded clockwise by Hartford and Middlesex counties and New York (Atlantic Ocean) and Fairfield and Litchfield counties.

Interstate Highway 84 crosses the extreme northern part of the county from Hartford County into Fairfield County. Interstate Highway 91 comes in from the northeast, Middlesex County, and terminates at Interstate Highway 95. Interstate Highway 95 crosses the southern part of the county east to west Middlesex County to Fairfield County. United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Middlesex County to Fairfield County. United States Highway 5 comes in from Hartford County to the north and terminates at Interstate Highway 95. United States Highway 6 cuts the northwest tip from Litchfield County, north, to Fairfield County, west. George W. Bush, the 43rd President, was born in this county. The county is shaped like a diamond turned 45 degrees but with many jags. New Haven City is located on the southwest quarter of the county on the Long Island Sound. New Haven is county seat and the largest city. It is 15.5% of the county population. The county is in the New Haven-Milford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
