The granite capitol was originally completed in 1833 using the designs of Ammi Burnham Young and Thomas Silloway.  It is located on State Street at Governor Aiken Avenue.  Interstate State Highway 89 is 1 mile southwest of the capitol.  The Capitol is designed in Greek Revival style.  The Supreme Court Building in Montpelier is the only supporting building.  The state was officially created as the 14th state on May 4, 1791 from Native American lands and the Vermont Republic.  Montpelier has been the capital since 1805 with Windsor before that.  The state name is probably French for “the green mountain.”  Montpelier is named for Montpelier, France.  Burlington is probably named for the Earl of Burlington.  Mount Mansfield in Chittenden County is the highest point and the lowest point is Lake Champlain in Grand Isle County on the border with New York.

Vermont government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Auditor.  There are 30 Senators and 150 Representatives in the Legislature.  Five Supreme Court Justices serve Vermont in the Judicial.  Vermont is located in the northeastern part of the United States as part of the New England states on the border with Canada.  The geographic center is in Washington County 4 miles southeast of Roxbury.  The state is surrounded clockwise by Canada, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York.

The area is 9616 square miles.  It is 45th largest state in the country.  It is the 49th most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 66.9 persons per square mile making it 30th in the country.  Its major rivers are the Connecticut, the Poultney, the Otter Creek, the Winooski, and the Lamoille.  Montpelier is located in the central part of the state.  Burlington is located in the northwest quarter of the state.
