The red brick Classical Revival facility was built in 1871.  It is at the intersection of Center and Court streets.  United States Highway 7 is two blocks to the east of the facility.  J. J. R. Randall is the building architect.  The building was enlarged in 1954.  A 2010 District Courthouse augments the county.  The county was created on February 16, 1781 from Bennington County as the 3rd county.  There were 1784 and 1792 courthouses previously in Rutland, the only county seat.  Rutland County and its county seat are named for Rutland, Massachusetts.  Rutland County is the birthplace of 6 Vermont Governors, Stephen Royce, John B. Page, John A. Mead, Percival W. Clement, Charles M. Smith, and Robert T. Stafford. 

Rutland County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, and a clerk but doesn’t have a unified government as each township governs.  One Superior Court Judge serves Rutland, Addison, and Chittenden counties and Three Superior Court Judges serve Rutland County.  The county is located on the western border with New York.  Burlington, Vermont is north and Albany, New York is southwest of the county.  The county center is 3.5 miles Northwest of Rutland.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Addison, Windsor, and Bennington counties and New York. 

The area of the county is 932 square miles.  It is 2 out of 14 in the state.  It ranks 2 out of 14 in population in the state.  It has a density of 65.0 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 14 in the state.  Rutland County has 27.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 4 crosses east to west in the county from Windsor County to New York.  United States Highway 7 enters from Addison County, north, and exits into Bennington County, south.  The county looks like a watering can.  The City of Rutland is located in the eastern third of the county.  Rutland is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 26.1% of the county population.  This county is in the Rutland Micropolitan Statistical Area.
