The red brick capitol was originally completed in 1797 using the designs of Joseph Horatio Anderson.  It is located on Capitol Circle at Bladen Street.  United States Highway 50 is 10 blocks northwest of the capitol.  The Capitol is designed in Georgian style.  The only major supporting structure is the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals building in Annapolis.  The state was officially created as the 7th state on April 28, 1788 from Native American lands and the Province of Maryland.  Annapolis has been the capital since 1694.  The state’s name comes from the Queen Mary wife of King Charles I of England.  Annapolis is named for Lady Anne Arundel wife of Lord Baltimore Second, “Anne city.”  Baltimore is named for Lord Baltimore Second.  Hoye Crest in Garrett County is the highest point and the lowest point is sea level at the Atlantic Ocean. 

Maryland government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Comptroller.  There are 47 Senators and 141 Representatives in the Legislative.  Seven Court of Appeals Justices serve Maryland in the Judicial, there is no Supreme Court.  Maryland is located in the east central part of the United States.  The geographic center is in Prince Georges County 13 miles northwest of Davidsonville.  The state is surrounded clockwise by Pennsylvania, Delaware, the Atlantic Ocean, Virginia, and West Virginia. 

The area is 12406 square miles.  It is 42nd largest state in the country.  It is the 18th most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 497.9 persons per square mile making it 5th in the country.  Its major rivers are the Pocomoke, the Nanticoke, the Choptank, the Susquehanna, the Patuxent, and the Potomac.  Annapolis is located in the southern half of the state.  Baltimore is in the northeast quarter of the state.
