The stone and masonry capitol was built in 1931 as a federal building for the Alaskan Territory.  It was renovated in 2017.  It is located on 5th, Main, 4th, and Seward streets.  Alaska State Highway 7 is four blocks south of the building.  Federal architects provided the original designs in Art Deco.  The major supporting structure are the Juneau Borough Courthouse which houses the Supreme Court and Appellate Courthouse in Anchorage.  The state was established as the 49th state on January 3, 1959 from the Alaska Territory.  The territory was purchased from Russia is 1867 and named from a Native American term meaning “object which the sea is directed.”  Sitka was the capital until 1906 when Juneau assumed the role.  Juneau is named for Gold prospector Joe Juneau.  Anchorage is a geographical term.  Juneau has always been the state capital.  Denali (Mount McKinley) is the highest point and sea level is the lowest point. 

Alaska government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, Education Superintendent, Insurance Commissioner, Comptroller, Agriculture Commissioner, Natural Resources Commissioner, Labor Commissioner, and Public Service Commissioner.  There are 20 Senators and 40 Representatives in the Legislative.  Five Supreme Court Justices and Three Court of Appeals Judges serve Alaska in the Judicial. Alaska is separated from the 48 contiguous states to the northwest.  It is connected to Canada and a short 2.4 miles from Russia.  The geographic center is in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area 78 miles northwest of Denali.  The state is surrounded clockwise by the Arctic Ocean, Canada, the Pacific Ocean, and the Bering Sea. 

The area is 665384 square miles.  It is 1st largest state in the country.  It is the 48th most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 1.1 persons per square mile making it 50th in the country.  The Yukon River is the only major river in the state.  The capital is the southeastern quarter of the state.  The largest city is on the southern coastline.
