Like all Census Areas, it is part of the Unorganized Borough created in 1961 and is governed at the state level therefore the State Capitol is shown.  A Modern building in Nenana serves as the courthouse.  Fort Yukon and Galena also have courthouses.  The census area gets its name from the Yukon River and the Koyukuk River.  Nenana is named for the river and a Native American tribe.  The courthouse is located at 10th Street on the A3 Highway.  Its size makes it the largest county/county equivalent in the United States.  It is roughly the size of Montana. 

Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area government is conducted at the state level.  Four Superior Judges and Four District Judges serve the Fourth Judicial District which includes the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area (judicial.)  The census area is in the north central part of Alaska stretching from the Canadian border on the east to near the Bering Sea on the west.  It was organized in 1980 when the unorganized territory was divided to make it simpler.  The center of the census area is 60 miles Northwest of Nenana at the mouth of the Tanana River.  The census area is surrounded clockwise by North Slope Borough and Canada and Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, Fairbanks North Star and Denali Boroughs, and Bethel, Kusilvak, and Nome Census Areas, and Northwest Arctic Borough. 

The area of the census area is 145,5763 square miles.  It is 1 of 30 in size.  It ranks 17 out of 30 in population in the state.  It has a density of 0.04 persons per square mile making it 30 out of 30 in the state.  Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area has 68.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Its overall shape looks like a necktie.  Galena is the largest city in the census area.  It is 8.4% of the census area population.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Census Area.  The census area is pronounced YUE-KON KIE-E-KUK.  The seat is pronounced NEE-NA-NA.
