The marble capitol was originally completed in 1966 using the designs of W. C. Kruger. It is located on Capitol Street at Old Santa Fe Trail. United States Highway 285 is 8 blocks west of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Territorial Revival and Neoclassical style. The supporting buildings are the Supreme Court building in Santa Fe and the Court of Appeals building in Albuquerque. The state was officially created as the 47th state on January 6, 1912 from Native American lands and New Mexico Territory. Santa Fe has been the capital since 1610. The state’s name comes from the country whose name is Native American for the land of the Aztecs. Santa Fe is named for a pueblo which is Spanish for “holy faith.” Albuquerque is named for the Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico), the Duke of Albuquerque. Wheeler Peak in Taos County is the highest point and the lowest point is Roosevelt Reservoir in Eddy County at the Texas border.
New Mexico government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Auditor, Treasurer, and Land Commissioner. There are 42 Senators and 70 Assembly Members in the Legislature. Five Supreme Court Justices and Ten Appellant Judges serve New Mexico in the Judicial. New Mexico is located in the southwest part of the United States on the border with Mexico. The geographic center is in Torrance County 14 miles south southwest of Willard. The state is surrounded clockwise by Colorado, Texas, Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.
The area is 121590 square miles. It is 5th largest state in the country. It is the 36th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 17.4 persons per square mile making it 45th in the country. Its major rivers are the Rio Grande, the Canadian, the Pecos, the Gila, and the San Juan. Santa Fe is the north central third of the state. Albuquerque is located in the central part of the state.
