The concrete capitol was originally completed in 1981 using the designs of Joseph Bell DeRemer and W. F. Kurke. It is located on Divide Street at State Street. Interstate Highway 94 is 4 blocks north of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Modern style. The Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals are located in the Judicial Wing of the Capitol in Bismarck. The state was officially created as the 39th state on November 2, 1889 from Native American lands and the Dakota Territory. Bismarck has been the capital since 1883 with Yankton serving before that. The state is named for the Native American tribe. Bismarck is named for German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Fargo is named for William Fargo, railroad officer.
North Dakota government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Auditor, and Treasurer. There are 47 Senators and 94 Representatives in the Legislature. Five Supreme Court Justices and Three Court of Appeals Justices serve North Dakota in the Judicial. North Dakota is located in the north central part of the United States on the border with Canada. The geographic center is in Sheridan County 3 miles southwest of McClusky. The state is surrounded clockwise by Canada, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Montana.
The area is 59,708 square miles. It is 19th largest state in the country. It is the 47th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 11.0 persons per square mile making it 47th in the country. Its major rivers are the Missouri, the Red, the James, the Sheyenne, and the Pembina. White Butte in Slope County is the highest point and the lowest point is the Red River at the Canadian border.
Bismarck is located in central part of the state. Fargo is located on the eastern border with Minnesota.
