The brown brick Federalist Revival structure is located on Broadway at Avenue B East. Broadway is North Dakota State Highway 3 in the town. It was built in 1924 as a store using the designs of E. A. Moline. It was enlarged in 1937 and remodeled in 1978. There previously was a wooden 1901 building. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. Napoleon and King (1899 only) have been the county seats for the county. The county was created on January 4, 1873 as the 11th county. The county is named for Civil War General John A. Logan. Napoleon was named after Napoleon Goodsill, one of the city founders.
Logan County government consists of a recorder, a sheriff, an attorney, and a treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Seven District Court Judges serve Logan, Burleigh, Emmons, Grant, Kidder, McIntosh, McLean, Mercer, Morton, Oliver, Sheridan, and Sioux counties and a court clerk serves Logan County (judicial.) The county is in the southern part of the state. Bismarck, North Dakota is northwest and Fargo, North Dakota is northeast of the county. The county center is 13.1 miles East of Napoleon. The county is surrounded clockwise by Stutsman, La Moure, McIntosh, Emmons, and Kidder counties.
The area of the county is 993 square miles. It is 39 out of 53 in the state. It ranks 47 out of 53 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.9 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 53 in the state. Logan County has 57.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county is a rectangle. Napoleon is located in the northwest quarter of the county. Napoleon is the county seat and the largest city. It is 39.8% of the county population.
