The sandstone capitol was originally completed in 1871 using the designs of Joseph Gosling. It is located on Lincoln Avenue at Musser Street. Interstate Highway 580 is 22 blocks east of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Neoclassical Italianate style. The Legislative Building and Supreme Court Building in Carson City are the supporting buildings. The state was officially created as the 36th state on October 31, 1864 from Native American lands, the Utah Territory, Arizona Territory, and the Nevada Territory. Carson City has been the capital since 1861. The state’s name comes from the mountain range Sierra Nevada which is Spanish meaning “snow covered mountain.” Carson City is named for frontiersman Kit Carson. Las Vegas is Spanish for the Native American “the meadows.” Boundary Peak in Esmeralda County is the highest point and the lowest point is the Colorado River at the California border.
Nevada government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor, and Treasurer. There are 21 Senators and 42 Assembly Members in the Legislature. Seven Supreme Court Justices and Three Court of Appeals Judges serve Nevada in the Judicial. Nevada is located in the western part of the United States. The geographic center is in Lander County 26 miles southeast of Austin. The state is surrounded clockwise by Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and California.
The area is 110572 square miles. It is 7th largest state in the country. It is the 32nd most populated state in the country. It has a density of 28.1 persons per square mile making it 42nd in the country. Its major rivers are the Colorado, the Humboldt, the Truckee, and the Walker. Carson City is northwestern quarter of the state. Las Vegas is located in the southern quarter of the state.
