The Modern brown brick building was constructed in 1970 to replace the 1883 courthouse. It is on E Street at 2nd Street. United States Highway 95 is three blocks north of the site. Lockard and Casazza provided the designs. A Public Safety Building was added in 1973. Mineral County was created on January 1, 1911 from Esmeralda County as the 16th county with Hawthorne as the only county seat. The county is named for the local mining industry. The county seat is reportedly named for a settling family.
Mineral County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an attorney, a treasurer and a clerk (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Two District Court Judges serve Mineral, Lander, and Pershing counties and One Justice Court Judge serves Mineral County (judicial.) Mineral County is on the western border with California. Reno, Nevada is northwest and Las Vegas, Nevada is southeast of the county. The county center is 9.7 miles East of Hawthorne. The county is surrounded clockwise by Churchill, Nye, and Esmeralda counties and California and Lyon County.
The area of the city is 3757 square miles. It is 12 out of 17 in the state. It ranks 13 out of 17 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.2 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 17 in the state. Mineral County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities. United States Highway 6 clips the southwest tip of the county from Esmeralda County, east, to California, west. United States Highway 95 travels north to south from Churchill County, north, to Esmeralda County, east. United States Highway 95 Alternate originates and heads west into Lyon County. The county resembles an arrow pointing south. Hawthorne is in the western third of the county. Hawthorne is the county seat and the largest populated area. It is 68.5% of the county population.
