The stone capitol was originally completed in 1916 using the designs of Richard K.A. Kletting. It is located on State Street at 300 North Avenue. Interstate States Highway 15 is 9 blocks west of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Neoclassical Revival and Corinthian style. The Supreme Court and Court of Appeals are in the Salt Lake County Courts Building in Salt Lake City as a supporting building. The state was officially created as the 45th state on January 4, 1896 from Native American lands and the Utah Territory. Salt Lake City has been the capital since 1858 with Fillmore before that. The state name is Native American for “one who is higher.” Salt Lake City is named for the lake which was named by explorers. Kings Peak in Duchesne County is the highest point and the lowest point is at Beaver Dam Wash in Washington County on the Arizona border.
Utah government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Auditor. There are 29 Senators and 75 Representatives in the Legislature. Five Supreme Court Justices serve Utah in the Judicial. Utah is located in the western-central part of the United States. The geographic center is in Sanpete County 3 miles northwest of Manti. The state is surrounded clockwise by Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada.
The area is 84897 square miles. It is 13th largest state in the country. It is the 30th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 38.5 persons per square mile making it 39th in the country. Its major rivers are the Colorado, the Green, the Virgin, the Jordan, and the Bear. Salt Lake City is located in the northeast quarter part of the state.
