The Modern red brick and concrete courthouse replaced a brick two story building.  It was built in 1982.  A veteran’s wall and fountain adorn the front of the building.  The facility is sited on Main Street and 100 North Street.  United States Highway 89 is one block south of the courthouse.  Stringham and Stringham provided the designs.  Kane County was established on January 16, 1864 from Washington County as the 17th county.  Grafton (1866), Rockville (1867), Tonquerville (1869), and Kanab (1882) have all been the county seat.  The county was named for Civil War General Thomas Kane.  The county seat name is Native American for “willow.” 

Kane County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges and One Juvenile Court Judge serve Kane, Garfield, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier, and Wayne counties.  Kane County is located on the southern border with Arizona.  Salt Lake City, Utah is north and Las Vegas, Nevada is southwest of the county.  The Colorado River forms its eastern border.  The county center is 29.9 miles Northeast of Kanab nearer Glendale.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Garfield and San Juan counties and Arizona and Washington and Iron counties. 

The area of the county is 3990 square miles.  It is 8 out of 29 in the state.  It ranks 23 out of 29 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.9 persons per square mile making it 24 out of 29 in the state.  Kane County has 80.2% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 89 enters the county from the north, Garfield County, and exits to the south, Arizona.  United States Highway 89 Alternate originates and heads south into Arizona.  The county is shaped like a knife blade.  Kanab is located on the southwest border of the county.  Kanab is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 61.0% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced KA-NAB.
