The limestone capitol was originally completed in 1915 using the designs of George R. Mann. It is located at West Capitol at Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Interstate Highway 630 is 3 blocks to the south of the capitol. It is designed in American Neoclassical. The major supporting structure is the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Courthouse. The state was officially created as the 25th state on June 15, 1836 from the Arkansas Territory which came from the Louisiana Purchase and Native American lands. The state’s name comes from a Native American word for the Quapaw tribe. The name of Little Rock comes from the river which French explorer Benard de la Harpe gave to a rock on the river “La Petite Roche.” Little Rock has been the capital since 1821 with Arkansas Post as capital during territorial days. Mount Magazine in Logan County is the highest point and the Ouachita River at the Louisiana border is the lowest point.
Arkansas government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor, and Land Commissioner. There are 35 Senators and 100 Representatives in the Legislative. Seven Supreme Court Justices and Twelve Court of Appeals Judges serve Arkansas in the Judicial. Arkansas is located in south central United States. The geographic center is in Pulaski County 14 miles northwest of Little Rock. The state is surrounded clockwise by Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma.
The area is 53179 square miles. It is 29th largest state in the country. It is the 33rd most populated state in the country. It has a density of 56.6 persons per square mile making it 36th in the country. Major rivers include the Arkansas, the Mississippi, the Ouachita, the White, the Red, and the St. Francis. Little Rock is located at the center of the state.
