Tall front columns and a small clock tower give the brick courthouse the appearance of a church.  The courthouse is located on a square at West Center, Main, Pine and Oak streets.  The site is one block west of United States Highway 167 on United States Highway 270 (Center Street).  This structure was built in 1964 using the Greek Revival designs of Ginocchio, Cromwell, Carter, and Neyland, Inc.  There has been an earlier courthouse in Sheridan, the only county seat.  Grant County got its name from United States President and Civil War General Ulysses Grant.  Sheridan got its name from Civil War General Phillip Sheridan.  Grant County was formed on February 4, 1869 from parts of Hot Spring, Jefferson, and Saline counties as the 60th county. 

Grant County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and coroner (executive).  It has 9 Quorum Court members (legislative.)  Two Circuit Court Judges serve Grant and Hot Spring counties and a District Court Judge, an Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Grant County (judicial.)  It is situated in the central Arkansas just south of Little Rock, Arkansas and west of Pine Bluff, Arkansas.  The center of the county is 6.7 miles South-Southwest of Sheridan.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Saline, Pulaski, Jefferson, Cleveland, Dallas, and Hot Spring counties.  The county is shaped like a backward capital D.  The Saline River is part of the southern border.  Sheridan is north and east of the county center.  Sheridan is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 27.7% of the county population.  

The area of the county is 633.0 square miles.  It is 47 of 75 in size.  It ranks 38 out of 75 in population in the state.  It has a density of 28.4 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 75 in the state.  Grant County has 36.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 65 cuts the northeast corner going from Pulaski County, north, to Jefferson County, east.  United States Highway 167 crosses north to south from Pulaski County into Cleveland County.  United States Highway 270 travels east to west, Jefferson County to Hot Spring County.  The county is in the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area.
