The granite capitol was originally completed in 1833 using the designs of Ithiel Town, Alexander Jackson Davis, Williams Nichols, Sr., William Nichols, Jr., and David Patton. It is located on Edenton Street at Wilmington Street. Interstate Highway 40 is 18 blocks south of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Greek Revival style. The supporting buildings are the Legislative Building, the Supreme Court Building, and the Court of Appeals Building all in Raleigh. The state was officially created as the 12th state in November 21, 1789 from Native American lands and the Province of North Carolina. Charleston, Edenton and New Bern have served as the capital until 1792 when Raleigh assumed the role. The state is named for the Latin form of King Charles I. Raleigh is named for Sir Walter Raleigh, founder of North Carolina. Charlotte is named for Queen Charlotte. Mount Mitchell in Yancey County is the highest point and the lowest point is sea level at the Atlantic Ocean.
North Carolina government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Auditor, Treasurer, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Agriculture Commissioner, Labor Commissioner, and Insurance Commissioner. There are 50 Senators and 120 Representatives in the Legislature. Seven Supreme Court Justices and Fifteen Court of Appeals Justices serve North Carolina in the Judicial. North Carolina is located in the southeast part of the United States on the Atlantic Ocean. The geographic center is in Chatham County 13 miles northwest of Sanford. The state is surrounded clockwise by Virginia, the Atlantic Ocean, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.
The area is 53819 square miles. It is 28th largest state in the country. It is the 9th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 194.0 persons per square mile making it 14th in the country. Its major rivers are the Chowan, the Roanoke, the Pamlico, the Neuse, the Cape Fear, the Yadkin, and the Catawba. Raleigh is located in the east central third of the state. Charlotte is located in the south part of the state.
