A tan brick 1912 Classical Revival facility is located on Martin and Green streets.  United States Highway 74 passes one block north of the site.  Wheeler and Stern were the building designers.  The facility features columns and veteran memorials.  A more traditional 1869 courthouse preceded the current one also in Wadesboro.  Mount Pleasant was the first county seat until 1785.  Anson County was created on January 1, 1750 from Bladen County as the 18th county.  The county is named for British Admiral George Anson. Wadesboro is named for Colonel Thomas Wade. 

Anson County government consists of a manager, a register, a sheriff, an attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-four Superior Court Judges serve Anson, Alamance, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Richmond, Scotland, Stanly, Union, and Wake counties Three District Court Judges serve Anson, Richmond, and Scotland counties and a court clerk serves Anson County (judicial.)  Anson County is on the southern border with South Carolina.  Charlotte, North Carolina is northwest and Raleigh, North Carolina is northeast of the county.  The county center is 9.5 miles Northwest of Wadesboro nearer Polkton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Montgomery and Richmond counties and South Carolina and Union and Stanly counties. 

The area of the county is 537 square miles.  It is 41 out of 100 in the state.  It ranks 76 out of 100 in population in the state.  It has a density of 41.1 persons per square mile making it 86 out of 100 in the state.  Anson County has 40.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 52 passes north to south in the county from Stanly County to South Carolina. United States Highway 74 goes east to west from Richmond County to Union County. The county resembles a wave.  Wadesboro is located slightly south of center in the county.  Wadesboro is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 22.8% of the county population.  This county is in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord Metropolitan Statistical Area.
