The granite capitol was originally completed in 1832 using the designs of Charles Bulfinch.  It is located on Capitol Street at State Street.  Interstate Highway 95 is 15 blocks west of the capitol.  The Capitol is designed in Federal style.  The only major supporting structure is the Supreme Court building in Portland.  The state was officially created as the 23rd state on March 15, 1820 from Native American lands and the District of Maine (part of Massachusetts.)  Augusta has been the capital since 1832 when it assumed the role from Portland.  The state’s name comes from the Province of Maine in France.  Augusta is named for Augusta Dearborn daughter of Henry Dearborn, Revolutionary soldier.  Portland is named for the Isle of Portland in England.  Mount Katahdin in Piscataquis County is the highest point and the lowest point is sea level at the Atlantic Ocean. 

Maine government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Treasurer, and Auditor.  There are 35 Senators and 151 Representatives in the Legislative.  Seven Supreme Court Justices serve Maine in the Judicial.  Maine is located in the northeast part of the United States, the farthest eastern state in Continental United States.  The geographic center is in Piscataquis County 13 miles northwest of Dover-Foxcroft.  The state is surrounded clockwise by Canada, the Atlantic Ocean, and New Hampshire. 

The area is 35380 square miles.  It is 39th largest state in the country.  It is the 42nd most populated state in the country.  It has a density of 38.5 persons per square mile making it 40th in the country.  Its major rivers are the St. John, the Aroostook, the Penobscot, the Kennebec, the Saco, and the Androscoggin.  Augusta is located in the southwest quarter of the state.  Portland is in the southwest quarter of the state.
