The 1854 red brick Italianate building in Belfast was remodeled in 1900. The courthouse is on Church Street at Market Street. The courthouse designers were Benjamin S. Dean and Edwin L. Brown. United States Highway 1 is five blocks to the northwest of the location. The structure has been enlarged. A District Courthouse is also in Belfast. A new Judicial Center is under construction in 2019. Waldo County was established on February 7, 1827 from parts of Hancock, Kennebec, and Lincoln counties as the 10th county. Belfast has always been the county seat. The county is named for land speculator Samuel Waldo. The county seat is named for Belfast, Ireland. Waldo County was the birthplace of 2 Maine Governors, William G. Crosby and Daniel F. Davis.

The county is surrounded clockwise by Penobscot and Hancock counties and Atlantic Ocean and Knox, Lincoln, Kennebec, and Somerset counties.

It has a density of 46.4 persons per square mile making it 7 out of 16 in the state. Waldo County has 17.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 1 crosses east to south in the county from Hancock County to Knox County. United States Highway 1 Alternate enters from the north and terminates in the county. The county is shaped like a cross. Belfast is on the east coast of the county. Belfast is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 17.2% of the county population.
