The red brick Colonial Revival building was originally erected in 1806 and enlarged in 1819. There have been remodeling in 1854, 1896, 1917, and 1936. It was enlarged again in 1957. William Parsons and John Holmes provided the courthouse designs. It is located at Court Street and Depot Street. United States Highway 202 passes one block to the northwest of the site. A 1733 version of the courthouse was in the village of York. There are District Courthouses in Biddeford, Springdale, and York. The county is named for the Duke of York. The county seat is named for King Alfred. York County was the birthplace of 1 Maine Governor, David Dunn. York County was created on January 1, 1652 as the original county.

Biddeford is in the eastern tip of the county on the coast. Alfred is the county seat and Biddeford is the largest city. Alfred is 0.4% of the county population while Biddeford is 10.6% of the county population. This county is in the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
