The 1869 red brick Greek Revival courthouse is on High at Court streets. United States Highway 1 is one block to the south. Francis H. Fassett is the building designer. The building was enlarged in 1987. A 1991 District Courthouse is in West Bath. Sagadahoc County was created on February 14, 1854 from Lincoln County as the 14th county with Bath as the only county seat. The county’s name is Native American for the southern part of the Kennebec River. The county seat is named for Bath, England. Sagadahoc County was the birthplace of 1 Maine Governor, Sumner Sewall.

Bath is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city. It is 23.9% of the county population. The county is pronounced SAG-A-DA-HOK. This county is in the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
