The 1869 red brick Greek Revival courthouse is on High at Court streets.  United States Highway 1 is one block to the south.  Francis H. Fassett is the building designer.  The building was enlarged in 1987.  A 1991 District Courthouse is in West Bath.  Sagadahoc County was created on February 14, 1854 from Lincoln County as the 14th county with Bath as the only county seat.  The county’s name is Native American for the southern part of the Kennebec River.  The county seat is named for Bath, England.  Sagadahoc County was the birthplace of 1 Maine Governor, Sumner Sewall. 

Sagadahoc Couty government consists of an administrator, a sheriff, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Two District Court Judges, One Superior Court Judge, One Probate Court Judge and a court clerk serve Sagadahoc County (judicial.) The county is on the southern coast of Maine.  Portland, Maine is directly west and Bangor, Maine is northeast of the county.  The county center is 4.4 miles North-Northwest of Bath.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kennebec and Lincoln counties and Atlantic Ocean and Cumberland and Androscoggin counties. 

The area of the county is 370 square miles.  It is 16 out of 16 in the state.  It ranks 12 out of 16 in population in the state.  It has a density of 99.2 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 16 in the state.  Sagadahoc County has 23.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 295 crosses north to southwest in the county from Kennebec County to Cumberland County.  United States Highway 1 goes east to southwest from Lincoln County to Cumberland County.  United States Highway 201 parallels Interstate Highway 295 from Kennebec to Cumberland counties.  The county is shaped like a comma.  Bath is located in the southern quarter of the county.  Bath is the county seat and, as the only incorporated city, it is the largest city.  It is 23.9% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SAG-A-DA-HOK.  This county is in the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford Metropolitan Statistical Area.
