A basic gray brick Greek Revival facility serves Kennebec County with the 1830 building. It was remodeled in 1851 and in 1907. The facility is on State Street at Green Street. United States Highway 201 passes two blocks south of the courthouse. Robert C. Vose is the building architect. The courthouse was enlarged in 1851 and 1907. A Judicial Center with District Courthouse was added in 2015. The Maine state capitol is located in this county. Augusta has been the only county seat. Kennebec County was established on February 20, 1799 and named for the river. The county was formed from Lincoln County as the 6th county with Augusta as the only county seat.
