The eastern shore norm is evident in the 1885 red brick High Victorian and Italianate facility.  The courthouse is at Main and Academy streets.  Its designer was George M. Coombs.  The building was enlarged in 1917 and remodeled in 1958.  Main Street is Maine State Highway 43 in the town.  A District Courthouse augments the county courthouse.  The county is named for American statesman Benjamin Franklin.  The county seat is a geographical name for its area.  Farmington has always been the county seat.  Franklin County was the birthplace of 1 Maine Governor, Janet T. Mills.  The county was formed on May 9, 1838 from parts of Kennebec, Oxford, and Somerset counties as the 12th county. 

Franklin Couty government consists of an administrator, a sheriff, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  One District Court Judge, One Superior Court Judge, One Probate Court Judge and a court clerk serve Franklin County (judicial.) Franklin County is in the northwest part of the state.  Its northern border is Canada.  Portland, Maine is south and Bangor, Maine is east of the county.  The county center is 40.4 miles North-Northwest of Farmington nearer Carrabassett Valley.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Canada and Somerset, Kennebec, Androscoggin, and Oxford counties. 

The area of the county is 1744 square miles.  It is 8 out of 16 in the state.  It ranks 15 out of 16 in population in the state.  It has a density of 16.9 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 16 in the state.  Franklin County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  United States Highway 2 crosses east to west in the county from Somerset County to Oxford County.  The county is shaped like the left parenthesis.  Farmington is in the southern quarter of the county.  Farmington is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 14.2% of the county population.
