A normal east coast red brick Georgian courthouse dates from 1824. Pownalborough had a courthouse in 1760. The facility is on Bath Street at Summer Street. United States Highway 1 is Bath Street. The courthouse was enlarged in 1950 and 1972. The architects are Ebenezer Clap, John Dole, and Isaac Reed. Lincoln County was created on November 1, 1760 and named for Lincoln, England. It was the 3rd county. Wiscasset is Native American for “hidden outlet.” Lincoln County was the birthplace of 2 Maine Governors, Edward Kavanagh and Hugh J. Anderson. The county was taken from York County as the 2nd county.
