The 1857 red brick Renaissance courthouse received a 1922 addition.  It is located on Court Street at Turner Street.  The courthouse was designed by Gridley James Fox Bryant.  United States Highway 202 is Court Street in the city.  The county was named after the river which was named for the Native American tribe.  The county seat’s name was taken from a poem by Oliver Goldsmith.  Androscoggin County was the birthplace of 7 Maine Governors, Israel Washburn, Jr., Nelson Dingley, Jr., Alonzo Garcelon, Bert M. Fernald, Frederick G. Payne, Kenneth M. Curtis, and Paul R. LePage.  Androscoggin County was created on March 18, 1854 from parts of Cumberland, Kennebec, and Lincoln counties as the 15th county with Auburn as the only county seat. 

Androscoggin Couty government consists of an administrator, a sheriff, a treasurer, and a coroner (executive).  It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.)  Four District Court Judges, One Superior Court Judge, One Probate Court Judge, and a court clerk serve Androscoggin County (judicial.) Androscoggin County is in the southeastern part of the state.  The Androscoggin River flows through the county.  Portland, Maine is southwest and Bangor, Maine is northeast of the county.  The county center is 7.8 miles North-Northeast of Auburn nearer Greene.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Franklin, Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Cumberland, and Oxford counties. 

The area of the county is 497 square miles.  It is 15 out of 16 in the state.  It ranks 5 out of 16 in population in the state.  It has a density of 223.6 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 16 in the state.  Androscoggin County has 55.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 95 goes east to southwest in the county from Kennebec County to Cumberland County.  United States Highway 202 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Kennebec to Cumberland counties.  The county is shaped like a bag of marbles.  Auburn is in the southern third of the county.  Lewiston is directly east of Auburn.  Auburn is the county seat and Lewiston is the largest city.  Auburn is 21.7% of the county population while Lewiston is 33.4% of the county population.  The county is pronounced AN-DRU-SKOG-IN.  This county is in the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area.
